How To Pay For a VMS CCTV System in Six Minutes

Have you ever considered the impact of productivity losses in business?

Unproductive Activity

Description of the Behavior

Wasted Time in Minutes per Day

Cell phone usage

Cell phone usage during work hours has reached the top of the list of problem areas as identified in a recent poll of VMS clients. When asked for how many calls came in during a shift the answers varied – but some owners counted as many as TWENTY calls in a single eight-hour shift!

Cigarette Breaks

The average smoker will have 5 cigarettes during any 8-hour work day. How long does it take to smoke each cigarette?  Five, ten, even 15 mins?

25 mins.

Long Lunches

Lunch allowances vary by state, but typically are 30-45 minutes. Many clients indicated that this time is often “stretched” by several minutes.

15 mins.

Coffee/Soda Breaks

Some employers offer 15 minute breaks during shifts. Others have them too, just without knowing.

Sitting and Leaning vs. Standing and Cleaning

This may be the oldest one in the book, but the impact was often overlooked until people were reviewing their video specifically to find it.

“Brooming” at opening and closing times

A new one for our Loss Prevention vocabulary, “Brooming” is the act of sweeping customers out the door when the employees are ready to close the store. Its counterpart shares a name with school on a snowy morning, the “delayed opening”. Is your store being opened and closed when it’s supposed to, or when the staff thinks it should be?

TOTAL UNPRODUCTIVE TIME IN A SINGLE EIGHT HOUR SHIFT →

2 hours

Two hours during an eight hour shift represents an amazing 25%! To put a dollar amount to this, consider a store with 4 employees per shift, each earning $10 per hour on average.
If the store is open from 9am – 9pm seven days and has an average hourly payroll of $40, then labor alone (before taxes, insurance, rent and all other costs) is a whopping $3,360 per week.
A twenty-five percent productivity drop, as illustrated above, costs the business owner $840 each week in unnecessary staffing - more than $3,600 per month and over $43,000 per year!
If a system were leased for $179 per month, a five percent recovery – or only SIX MINUTES PER SHIFT would pay for the system in FULL!

SIX MINUTES PER SHIFT = A FREE SYSTEM!
